The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is promoting a gradual transition to international interoperable standards exchange model (IWXXM) for aeronautical meteorological information for compliance with the Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP) and Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBU).
IWXXM ver.1.0 for METAR, TAF and SIGMET was introduced in October 2013, and IWXXM ver.1.1 was approved by the 17th World Meteorological Congress (Cg-17) in 2015.
IWXXM ver.2.0 was issued in August 2016 with the introduction of new products and improvements including AIRMET, Volcanic Ash Advisory (VAA) and Tropical Cyclone Advisory (TCA). Supported by the 16th WMO Commission for Basic System in 2016, a revised IWXXM ver.2.1 has been approved by the 69th WMO Executive Council in May 2017.
Accordingly, the Aviation Meteorological Office (AMO) is developing IWXXM for aeronautical meteorological information.
First, the AMO developed IWXXM 1.1 for METAR/SPECI and TAF in March 2016 and produced a revised IWXXM ver. 2.0 in February 2017 for METAR/SPECI, TAF and SIGMET with the new introduction of AIRMET.
In addition, the AMO has shown graphics on its website which were made by using IWXXM and has provided a web-based automatic IWXXM conversion program since December 2017.
